How It Works & Who It’s For

DBT treatment at Beyond Expectation includes both individual therapy and group skills training, structured to provide comprehensive support and accountability.

Individual DBT Therapy
Weekly one-on-one sessions (50–60 minutes) focus on:

  • Reducing self-destructive or therapy-interfering behaviors

  • Improving overall quality of life

  • Building and applying coping skills

  • Tracking weekly emotions and identifying patterns of dysregulation

Group DBT Therapy
Weekly 2-hour group sessions (over approximately 6 months) emphasize skill-building in a classroom-style setting. Each session includes:

  • Review of previous homework and skill application

  • Teaching of a new skill by the group leader(s)

  • Assigned practice for the upcoming week

The group covers four key DBT modules:

  1. Mindfulness

  2. Emotion Regulation

  3. Distress Tolerance

  4. Interpersonal Effectiveness

This dual-track format ensures clients receive both personalized clinical attention and practical skills applicable to real-life challenges.

DBT is recommended for individuals who:

  • Feel emotionally overwhelmed, reactive, or out of control

  • Have difficulty managing anger, sadness, or anxiety

  • Struggle with impulsive or self-harming behaviors

  • Experience unstable or intense relationships

  • Feel stuck in therapy and want more structure and tools

  • Are committed to active change and ready to build new skills

DBT is suitable for both adolescents and adults seeking to reduce suffering and increase emotional mastery.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

A skills-based approach for emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and healthy relationships

Psychological testing is a structured and evidence-based process used to evaluate an individual’s cognitive abilities, emotional health, behavioral functioning, and learning profile. These evaluations are administered, scored, and interpreted by licensed professionals with clinical expertise.

Each assessment integrates test results with a comprehensive review of psychological, medical, educational, and personal history to ensure accuracy and relevance. Testing is never used in isolation but as part of a complete diagnostic process that informs treatment planning, academic support, or legal documentation.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a structured form of psychotherapy that blends cognitive behavioral techniques with mindfulness and acceptance strategies. Originally developed to treat borderline personality disorder, DBT has since been adapted to support individuals who experience intense emotions, impulsive behaviors, or chronic interpersonal difficulties.

The core aim of DBT is to help clients build a life they find meaningful by teaching them how to live in the moment, cope with emotional distress, regulate reactions, and improve their relationships. The therapy is both educational and experiential, empowering individuals to replace harmful behavior patterns with practical, healthy alternatives.

“Dialectical” refers to the idea of holding two seemingly opposing truths at the same time—acceptance and change. DBT encourages clients to accept their current reality while working actively toward personal growth and behavior change.
